There’s a lot of competition in the home security industry. According to SDM Magazine, the United States has roughly 13,000 home security companies (both regional and national). Though a few of these companies might claim to be national, they might not be able to service your specific area. Oddly enough, no one company actually services the entire country (not even ADT).

Protect America – Not the largest, but definitely the best, Protect America was founded in 1992 in Austin, Texas. Protect America pioneered the use of self-install, wireless security systems as a means of providing every American with affordable home security. The largest dealer of GE Security products in the United States, Protect America features customized security packages that are designed for each customer’s specific home security needs. The company also sells vehicle, carbon monoxide, and fire monitoring solutions. Though Protect America is owned by the same investment group that owns Quicken Loans and the Cleveland Cavaliers, the company is still run by its founder, Thad Paschall.

ADT – The largest home security company in the United States is also the largest home security company in the world. Owned by a Swiss-based conglomerate, ADT is a massive corporation with over 62,000 employees worldwide. In the U.S., ADT has roughly 8.3 million customers with their primary focus on home security, though the company also handles corporate and government accounts as well.

Broadview Security – Formerly known as Brink’s Home Security, Broadview Security was acquired in 2010 by Tyco International (the company that owns ADT). Broadview’s operations were merged with ADT’s and will eventually be phased out entirely but the brand continues to draw customers. A little bit of controversy surrounded Broadview’s advertisements which drew fire from critics that alleged they attempted to scare women. Saturday Night Live even did a parody of Broadview’s commercials.

Stanley CSS – This company is owned by the same company that makes the popular Black & Decker line of tools. Stanley Convergent Security Solutions hasn’t been around as long as some of the other larger companies but it has quickly grown into a major player in the home security industry. Stanley CSS also covers other areas of related to security, such as locks and guard services.

Protection One – Based in Lawerence, Kansas, Protection One boasts more than one million business and residential customers in the U.S. Along with home security, the company also offers services for carbon monoxide and fire.

Monitronics International Inc. – Another Texas-based home security company, Monitronics serves approximately 700,000 customers across all 50 states. The Dallas Morning News also called the company one of its best places to work in 2011.

Vector Security Inc. – Vector Security Inc. traces its history all the way back to the founding of the U.S. The company claims that Benjamin Franklin and 2 other signers of the Declaration of Independence are among its founders. Vector was originally founded by Franklin and other investors to insure and protect property from fire damage. Today, Vector Security is a national home security provider that is still best known in Philadelphia, where the company was founded.
